Publications

The MAPC Data Services Group provides research and analysis for many MAPC publications and presentations. A selection of major MAPC reports appears below, with the most recent listed first.

Massachusetts Community Types

In order to support planning, analysis and policy development, MAPC created a classification system for municipalities in Massachusetts.

MAPC has identified five basic community types across the state, four of which can be subdivided further into nine sub-types. The criteria used to type each city or town include land use and housing patterns, recent growth trends and projected development patterns.

The Community Type system can be used to understand how demographic, economic, land use, energy and transportation trends affect the state's diverse communities.

"MetroFuture Implementation Strategies" (December 2008)

MetroFuture is a bold and achievable plan to better the lives of the people who live and work in Metropolitan Boston, between now and 2030. It capitalizes on the region's most important assets: its diverse people and landscape, a history of innovation, and a commitment to education and civic engagement. The plan was adopted by MAPC in May 2008, and the detailed implementation strategies for achieving MetroFuture's goals were adopted in December 2008.

For more information, contact Director of Regional Plan Implementation Amy Cotter at 617-451-2770, ext. 2017 or at acotter@mapc.org.

Community Profiles (July 2008)

The Data Center compiles "Community Snapshots" that present a quick summary of current conditions for all 101 cities and towns in the MAPC region, and of every Boston neighborhood.

"MAPC Calendar and Annual Report" (Yearly)

MAPC's Annual Report is released in the form of an attractive, informative calendar. Each month highlights a particular topic or trend in the region. The organization's financial statement and letters from MAPC's President and Executive Director are also included in the calendar, and serve to keep our constituents informed about our work.

Previous calendars have illustrated changes in land use patterns, aging patterns, drinking water contamination and more. Each calendar offers supplementary text to give readers added insight into the data.

"Census 1990 and 2000 Demographic Profiles" (2003)

MAPC has released SF3 Demographic Profiles for selected Social, Economic and Housing Characteristics from the 1990 and 2000 censuses. Each of these PDF files contains data on the 101 communities in the MAPC region, followed by data on the eight subregions and the region as a whole. The profiles compare statistics from the 1990 and 2000 Census and provide the percent change between decades. The data for the 1990 and 2000 U.S. Census, SF3 were released in June 1992 and June 2002, respectively.

"Race and Ethnicity in the MAPC Region" (2001)

The data in this report provides a look at differences among the four major racial and ethnic groups in the MAPC region, using some of the most recent data available. The report also compares these groups to their counterparts in other major metropolitan areas.

A DECADE OF CHANGE combines available demographic, socio-economic, and other planning-related data into a single source to compare relevant quantitative measures over time. The report examines changes in seven issue areas: demographics, employment, housing, education, community vitality, transportation and environmental resources. It aims to serve as a guide to inform decision-makers, a tool for agencies and resident groups and to serve as a data source for citizens.
