Massachusetts Falling Behind in Race for Congressional Seats in Census Count

BOSTON — As states across the nation celebrate “Census Day” today, the latest Census estimates show that Massachusetts must gain more than 71,000 people in the 2010 Census in order to maintain its current level of Congressional representation.

According to analysis by the UMass Donahue Institute, Massachusetts is in direct competition with nine other states, including Washington, Oregon, Arizona and Florida, to maintain our current Congressional seats.

Massachusetts Communities Lagging Behind Nation in Census Participation

BOSTON — Just two weeks into Census 2010, Massachusetts response rates are trailing other parts of the nation, with local participation rates in Greater Boston as low as 5 percent – putting federal funding and congressional representation at risk.

According to today’s federal Census participation data, only 26 percent of Massachusetts residents have returned their 10-question Census form, which was mailed to every household in the Commonwealth in March.

Speaker discusses ‘Bicycles in Boston and the Public Health Connection

BOSTON – Join the Metropolitan Area Planning Council (MAPC) for a discussion of “Bicycles in Boston and the Public Health Connection” with Dr. Anne Lusk of Harvard, on Tuesday, March 23 from 6 p.m. to 7 p.m. at 60 Temple Place in Boston.

Dr. Lusk is a research fellow at the Harvard School of Public Health, with a Ph.D. in Architecture and a 28-year history of working on bicycle environments for all populations. She will discuss how Greater Boston’s bicycling infrastructure could be changed to increase cycling as well as improve health for men, women, children and seniors.
