With Greater Boston developing its long-range transportation plans, local planning officials want to make sure their towns are not left by the side of the road. Members of the Metropolitan Area Planning Council's SouthWest Advisory Planning Committee met in Milford yesterday to provide feedback for a long-term transportation plan put together by the Boston Region Metropolitan Planning Organization.

A regional ambulance plan involving Topsfield and five surrounding communities will gain some headway with the help of a study funded by the Metropolitan Area Planning Council. The six communities have been working on the ambulance plan for over a year and hope to find a better way to deliver ambulance and EMS services through regionalization.

The first annual photo contest sponsored by the Metropolitan Area Planning Council will accept entries now through May 20, 11:59 p.m. The photography contest themes are: sustainability, equity, community and prosperity in the Greater Boston region. Anti-gang activists rallied at the Statehouse earlier this week, asking legislators to restore funding for a community-grant program that saw its budget slashed by more than 60 percent this year. The Charles E. Shannon Jr. Community Safety Initiative grant program “is critical to the lives of our kids,” said Marc Draisen, executive director of the Metropolitan Area Planning Council. “The cutbacks have dramatically curtailed our efforts.”

For those who watch the bottom line relating to such matters, the financial results of all this "Heritage Tourism" is surprisingly large. Arlington, Lexington, Concord and Lincoln have recently recognized the benefits of such a combined approach. The "Battle Road National Scenic Byway," now a year into a preliminary planning phase, combines "hike and bike" options with car and bus programs, leading to gains in public health, environmental awareness, and such simple if rewarding outcomes as getting kids in touch with history and nature at the same time.

Nine empty storefronts in a Weymouth Landing building will likely remain vacant way for a while. The stretch of storefronts has been empty for about two years, and is a topic of discussion as Braintree and Weymouth officials target the Landing for redevelopment. Last month, the Metropolitan Area Planning Council presented its final rezoning recommendations, which included outdoor dining, improved storefronts and more public waterfront space.

For years, Quincy’s recreation department has held a basketball competition between city police and teens as part of a youth crime prevention initiative. It’s one of many programs that help keep at-risk teens off the streets. But its funding from the state has been challenged by two years of budget cuts. “The Shannon grant isn’t a luxury,” Quincy police Lt. Detective Patrick Glynn said. “It’s a necessity.”
