No city or town exists in a vacuum. Decision-making that extends beyond geographic boundaries impacts individual communities, whether it relates to ensuring a steady drinking water supply, air pollution, transportation planning, sprawl, the lack of affordable housing, or economic challenges. Through municipal collaboration and cooperation, cities and towns can co-create workable solutions to promote the sustainability of each community and the region
as a whole.

MAPC is charged with developing the regional plan for metropolitan Boston, as initiated in 1987 with MetroPlan. In 2002, the agency launched MetroFuture: Making a Greater Boston Region, a unique, collaborative approach to develop a regional plan that addresses the challenges and opportunities we face as we plan for the future. MetroFuture will use public participation, data analysis and cutting-edge technology to create a vision for the metropolitan Boston region and a strategy to get us there.
