Background

Established with support of the Metro Mayors Coalition in 2006, the Charles E. Shannon, Jr. Community Safety Initiative supports innovative, regional approaches to youth and gang violence in our communities. The Metro Mayors Coalition Shannon Grant consists of eight communities: Cambridge, Chelsea, Everett, Malden, Quincy, Revere, Somerville, and Winthrop. It is one of 15 sites across the state. The Shannon Grant works in concert with other programs, including the Safe and Successful Youth Initiative, Youth Jobs programs, and DPH violence prevention grants.

News and Updates

August 2016

This year’s annual Metro Mayors Coalition Shannon Grant Basketball Tournament is right around the corner. The tournament is being held on Saturday, August 6 at Trum Field in Somerville (541 Broadway). Registration begins at 9:30 a.m. and the games will kick-off at 10:00 a.m. It will wrap up at around 1:30 p.m.

The annual basketball tournament has been held since 2009 to bring together youth and police officers from all the Shannon Grant partner agencies. The tournament gives an opportunity for youth and law enforcement officers to interact in an informal setting, have fun, and build lasting relationships.

April 2016

The Shannon Grant was funded at $8.25 million for Fiscal Year 2015, but later reduced to $7 million. The program was funded at $7 million for Fiscal Year 2016.
