The economic vitality of Massachusetts is dependent upon a strong transportation infrastructure. From commuting to commerce, the means by which we move people and goods impacts our ability to attract new growth, support existing industry and position ourselves prominently in the global marketplace. Continued and careful investment in the region's roads, bridges and public transportation system is critical to the long-term success of the metropolitan Boston area.
MAPC’s Transportation Team supports the following planning services:
Air Quality and Transportation
Recent research suggests that vehicle emissions may pose a significant health risk for sensitive populations, including children and the elderly, living near high traffic roads. MAPC convened a group of air quality and public health experts, transportation and land use planners, regulators, and advocates to further understand the problem and to discuss potential measures to address it.
Transportation Funding Needs
In October MAPC, in partnership with the Massachusetts Association of Regional Governments (MARPA), released the Work Undone Report, which depicted a sampling of unfunded or under-funded transportation projects needed to grow our economy, increase mobility, connect our thriving communities and promote a wide range of public policy goals.

Transportation Alternatives
Alternative modes include bicycle and pedestrian transportation, ride sharing and other TDM services, and transit in under-served areas. MAPC provides technical support and research in conjunction with Central Transportation Planning Staff (CTPS) efforts.
Sustainable Transportation Toolkit
The MAPC transportation group is putting together a toolkit series on sustainable transportation practices for municipal officials, developers, citizen board members, and advocates. The tools provided will draw on both national best practices and local experience.
The first product of the Toolkit is a Parking Section. The parking toolkit provides information on the sources of local parking issues and help in identifying potential solutions.
Funding Opportunities
MAPC coordinates and implements various transportation funding programs. Click on the heading to link to program information and applications.
Metropolitan Planning Organization (MPO)
MAPC provides planning support to the Boston Region MPO and to our region's communities. Planning support includes developing the regional bicycle and pedestrian plans and providing alternative land use analysis, such as for the Belmont/Lexington/Waltham Sub-Area Study.
Policies in Process
