Help your community be part of MetroCommon 2050, Greater Boston’s next regional plan!

The Metropolitan Area Planning Council (MAPC) is now accepting applications for the MetroCommon 2050 Outreach Mini-Grant Program. We will be accepting applications and awarding mini-grants on a rolling basis until December 2020 for outreach projects to be completed between now and Spring 2021.

The purpose of the MetroCommon 2050 mini-grants is to fund community partners to help us with outreach, events, and collecting input in harder-to-reach communities. Voices of people from those communities will be crucial in developing the plan content and shaping the future of our region. We want to hear from the region, and we are providing resources to those who will help us reach underserved populations.

MetroCommon 2050 is Greater Boston’s next regional plan, and the process of developing it is being led by the Metropolitan Area Planning Council (MAPC). MAPC is regional planning agency that serves the people who live and work in the 101 cities and towns of Metropolitan Boston.

COVID-19-related unemployment could cause a massive housing crisis in Massachusetts. 468,000 Massachusetts residents filed unemployment claims in the first three weeks of the COVID crisis.

Who has been laid off? How many are now at risk of eviction or foreclosure? Will CARES Act assistance help? What about those who don’t qualify for federal aid? Join MAPC staff for a virtual discussion of our research brief, “The COVID-19 Layoff Housing Gap.”

On April 21, MAPC is releasing an update to “The COVID-19 Layoff Housing Gap” with the latest unemployment data.

At this webinar on April 22, MAPC Data Services Director Tim Reardon and Socioeconomic Analyst II Sarah Philbrick will discuss the updated data–and what it means for workers, municipalities, and the Commonwealth.

Homes for Profit: Speculation and Investment in Greater Boston

MAPC will be releasing research examining the prevalence, characteristics, and spatial patterns of residential property speculation in Greater Boston. Our research finds that low-income urban communities of color experience the highest rates of speculative investor activity. Investors are often able to buy properties at a discount using cash, and they are also more likely than non-investors to flip their properties and to make a significantly higher profit on flipped properties than non-investors.
