ENERGY STORAGE AND RESILIENCY

ENERGY STORAGE AND RESILIENCY

Clean Energy

Community Clean Energy Resiliency

PROJECT BACKGROUND

MAPC is working with the Town of Beverly and Town of Wayland on two Massachusetts Community Clean Energy Resiliency Initiative (CCERI) projects, funded by the MA Department of Energy Resources. These grants enable MAPC, in partnership with Beverly and Wayland, to use clean energy technologies and battery storage to support and protect critical infrastructure in an emergency while also improving their capacity to save energy and money throughout the year.

MAPC'S ROLE

MAPC can help your community explore energy resiliency options for your city or town, by guiding you through technology options (battery storage, microgrids and combined heat and power (CHP)), convening expert stakeholders, exploring grant opportunities, or providing technical assistance for project management.

WHY IT'S IMPORTANT

Energy resiliency is important for critical facilities that rely on electricity all or most of the time (e.g., hospitals and shelters). For critical facilities, islanding solar PV with battery storage or a microgrid can provide reliability and resilience in the case of a grid outage. Additionally, battery storage creates an opportunity for load shedding and subsequent energy cost savings.

COMMUNITY MICROGRIDS

OPPORTUNITIES AND THE ROLE OF MUNICIPALITIES

In 2016, MAPC hosted a Community Microgrid Workshop for Municipalities, in partnership with the Massachusetts Clean Energy Center and Meister Consultants Group. The event provided an introduction and overview of microgrid technology and its potential in communities across Massachusetts. Attendees also learned about the regulatory context, ownership models, siting, and financing options for municipalities. The interactive workshop featured many microgrid experts and local governments that have extensive experience in this field, and it presented feasible options for municipalities interested in exploring microgrid applications and opportunities.
