Planning and GIS Analyst
Alaa joined the Metropolitan Area Planning Council shortly after finishing graduate school. AT MAPC, Alaa is part of the Analytical Services Group in the Data Services Department and provides technical support in regional planning projects. Alaa supports management of external and internal data and mapping requests, and works across departments on projects such as Housing Production Plans and Smart Growth Overlay Zoning Districts in conjunction with municipalities.
Prior to joining MAPC, Alaa concentrated her graduate studies, research, and thesis work on issues relating to spatial equity, land use, segregation, and public transportation systems. Alaa interned with both the Metropolitan Transportation Authority (MTA) in New York City and the Massachusetts Bay Transportation Authority (MBTA) working on two unique projects. At the MBTA, Alaa worked with the Customer Technology Department on addressing cost allocation and optimization questions for installment of new fare vending machines as part of the Automated Fare Collection 2.0 (AFC) project.
In her role as National Program Manager for the National Partnership for New Americans (NPNA) Alaa led a remote team of citizenship coordinators spread across 11 states. Alaa’s work included providing legal and organizing training, webinars, and resources for newly established naturalization programs, building partnerships with unions and mayor’s offices, launching multiple national campaigns, and working with various stakeholders to advocate for national policies that promote equitable naturalization policies.
Alaa received her Master in City Planning from the Massachusetts Institute of Technology in June 2017, and her Bachelor of Science in Architectural Studies from the University of Urbana-Champaign in May 2009.
