Draft Population, Household, and Employment Projections
The February 15 formal response deadline has passed.
However, as we are in the processing phase of the feedback we received, if you would like to still provide your input, you may still do so (scroll down for more information). We will do our best to incorporate it into our final revisions.
These new projections will be used for the upcoming Long Range Transportation Plan under development by the Boston Region Metropolitan Transportation Organization, as well as many other purposes: water demand forecasting, housing plans, economic development strategies, and much more.
Your input will help to ensure that the forecasts incorporate accurate and up to date information about development activity, zoning constraints, and local plans.

Products for Review
MAPC is publishing two different types of products for review:
- Municipal forecasts of population, households, and employment by sector out to the year 2050, in tabular format, available here: Draft Projections Municipal Summaries
- Neighborhood-level (Census block group) projections of household and employment change from 2020 – 2030, as an interactive web map here: Draft Projections Web Map
Details about how to interpret both products are included below.
Providing Feedback
There are two principal ways that stakeholders can provide feedback:
Update MassBuilds
Information about development activity should be provided via MassBuilds, MAPC’s online development inventory. It’s easy to create an account, search for existing projects, edit outdated information, and add developments that aren’t already included. This is the most important and effective way to ensure that recent and anticipated development projects in your area are included in the projections. Detailed instructions on how use Massbuilds can be found below.
Update the Zoning Atlas
Information about allowable zoning densities can be updated through a form on the MAPC Zoning Atlas. If there are zoning districts not yet included in the atlas, or if you have broader comments on the zoning, please communicate those to MAPC via email to [email protected]. More detailed information about zoning assumptions can be found below.
MAPC is also open to general comments, questions, and feedback about the draft projections; however, new development and zoning information will have the most immediate and direct impact on the revised forecasts. Following this community comment period, MAPC will revise the projections and will submit them to the Boston Metropolitan Planning Organization (Boston MPO) for adoption into the upcoming Long Range Transportation Plan. This adopted set of projections will also become a reference for water demand planning, housing production plans, economic development plans, and much more. MAPC will continue to develop additional growth scenarios and maintain updated forecasts moving forward.
