8th Annual Shannon Grant Basketball Tournament

31 Aug 2016

On August 6th, the communities involved in the Metro Mayors Shannon Grant Community Safety Initiative came together for the 8th Annual Metro Mayors Basketball Tournament, organized by MAPC.

The tournament was held at Trum Field in Somerville and hosted teams from Malden, Cambridge, Quincy, Revere, Chelsea, Somerville, Everett, and Winthrop. Despite some mid-afternoon rain, youth were able to compete in the final games of the day, with Cambridge and Quincy winning their respective brackets.  This event brought together nearly 100 youth from around the region ranging in age from 14-17 years old, as well as law enforcement and youth program volunteers and managers. This year’s event would not have been possible without the generosity of Mayor Curtatone and the City of Somerville, who hosted the tournament. MAPC thanks all of the volunteers and participants and looks forward to facilitating more tournaments in the future.

The Shannon Grant Community Safety Initiative, named after the late Senator Charles E. Shannon, is a state funded program that supports innovative regional approaches to gang and youth violence prevention. The Metro Mayors Shannon Grant Community Safety Initiative prioritizes communication across municipal lines and coordination between public safety and social service agencies.   In its 10th year, this program remains an invaluable resource to the participating communities and helps prevent gang and youth violence, while fostering collaboration between Metro Mayors municipalities.
