Statement of Metro Mayors on Governor Baker’s Housing Choice Program

The Metro Mayors Coalition applauds Governor Baker for creating the new Housing Choice program.  This program clearly indicates the Administration’s commitment to preserving and producing housing not only to serve the needs of Massachusetts residents, but also to attract the workers we need for our growing economy.

The Housing Choice program provides a wide array of incentives to produce market-rate housing, affordable and workforce housing, housing for seniors, and housing for families.  We are also pleased the Governor has established a goal of producing 135,000 new homes in Massachusetts by 2025.

Last week the Metro Mayors Coalition undertook a commitment to work together towards a regional housing goal for the 14 municipalities we serve in the Inner Core of the Boston region. With support from the Administration, we are creating a task force to establish – and then to meet – that goal.  Creation of the Housing Choice program is clear evidence that we all intend to work together to stem the housing crisis not only in Metro Boston, but throughout the Commonwealth.

We look forward to continuing to work with our colleagues in the Legislature and in the Administration to ensure that the program is successful and that we can meet the housing needs to support our growing economy.
