What is a Planner?
Planners may work for cities and towns, consulting firms focused on architecture and development, and for state or federal agencies and non-profits. Their work helps to shape what our communities look like for future generations, using mapping and geography, analyzing data and statistics, conducting research, and hosting community meetings and events where neighbors can share ideas about where they live.
Planning is a creative and people-focused profession that uses skills like public speaking, writing, design, collaboration, critical thinking and leadership. Many planners begin higher education by studying environmental sciences, economics, geography and political science as undergraduates.

Charles W. Eliot II Scholarship
The Charles W. Eliot Scholarship was the precursor to the Planning Our Communities: Reimagining Our Region Scholarship. The Eliot II scholarship was an award given by MAPC to a graduating senior in memory of Charles W. Eliot II, an advocate of local planning, regional cooperation, and the environment.
As the planning field has grown and continues to do so to serve more diverse communities and to meet new challenges facing the Greater Boston region, we believe that MAPC's approach to encouraging the next generation to join this important field also needs to expand. The new scholarship - Planning Our Communities: Reimagining Our Region Scholarship - is one way to further that commitment.
