Regional Cultural Tourism Project

The Regional Cultural Tourism Project is a collaborative effort by MAPC and the Towns of Concord, Lexington, and Arlington to build local capacity to measure and expand the economic impacts of tourism through increased inter-municipal collaboration, strengthened connections among local tourism assets and businesses, and amplification of under-represented contemporary and historical narratives, past and present, particularly for these towns’ African American communities.

The Regional Cultural Tourism Project includes three related elements:

The Battle Road African-American Heritage interactive map, which is hosted on Social Pinpoint and displays sites and organizations reflective of the rich African American history of Arlington, Concord, and Lexington, connecting cultural assets reflective of the Revolutionary War era with contemporary cultural hubs. Where possible, the map identifies one of the following in each community:

  1. A historical site related to African American history during the Revolutionary War,
  2. A civic organization or community-based group elevating African American heritage,
  3. An organization advancing dialogues related to African American arts and culture, and
  4. A small business reflective of the legacy of African American history in community and economic development.

This framework highlights the connection between historical assets and economic development and, by extension, between historical and contemporary social inequities. In addition to communicating this information to the public, the map invites the public’s contributions to the conversation. Viewers may add comments about the map’s contents, suggestions for additions, and reflections on related historical narratives and their connection to community and economic development today.

As the 250th anniversary of the American Revolution approaches, the Regional Market Analysis speaks to Arlington, Concord, and Lexington’s opportunity to reframe the region’s foundational narratives to reflect a more inclusive range of histories and the region’s increasingly diverse population. The analysis leverages data collected from conversations with key municipal staff and other sources to assess the economic impacts of tourism in the region and provide the scaffolding for a regional approach to tourism and economic development planning. Ultimately, it calls for the region to craft a more inclusive and welcoming experience for visitors and community members, connect and expand existing tourism assets, and expand its reach to attract additional visitors and adapt to larger tourism trends.

Purpose

The Regional Market Analysis aims to assess the economic impacts of tourism in Arlington, Lexington, and Concord and establish inter-municipal data collection strategies for tracking these impacts moving forward.
