MAPC and the City of Newton invite you to attend a Kick-Off Roundtable Discussion to learn more about City’s process for developing the Climate Action Plan and to share your ideas on how should we act to combat climate change, considering Newton’s many strengths and singular needs. The Climate Action Plan, on which the City of Newton is partnering with the Metropolitan Area Planning Council (MAPC), will establish community-wide climate mitigation goals and identify potential measures to achieve them. It will be an action-driven plan to reduce greenhouse gas emissions and lay out the pathway toward a sustainable, resilient, and healthy community for all.
In December 2018, Governor Baker’s Commission on the Future of Transportation released their recommendations to address future challenges in transportation, exploring everything from the impacts of climate change to the rise of autonomous vehicle technology. This conference will give attendees an opportunity to hear directly from Commissioners as they present and discuss their findings. Secretary of Transportation, Stephanie Pollack, will offer a keynote address.

Hear from MassDOT, the Barr Foundation, and the Operational Services Division on how cities and towns can apply for the new MassDOT Shared Streets and Spaces grant program.
In addition to an overview of the program from MassDOT, we will learn more about the technical assistance available through the Barr Foundation and representatives from the Operation Services Division will discuss how municipalities may purchase materials needed for their pilots using OSD’s statewide contracts.
Join MAPC to hear from housing organizations, the Department of Housing & Community Development, and Boston and other municipalities on how to respond to residents at risk of eviction or other destabilizing forces during the pandemic.
We’ll learn about the anticipated impacts of expiring eviction moratoria, an overview of the Governor’s Eviction Diversion Initiative, and tenant rights and responsibilities. A panel will then discuss tools available to help residents stay in their homes, how to implement them, and what localities are doing to support residents experiencing housing instability during these unprecedented times.

While there are several criteria for how the Federal government determines grant recipients, the creation of good jobs through projects with commitments to strong labor standards and practices is key. Registered apprenticeships, joint labor-management training programs, certified payroll and the support of local labor organizations can help secure federal infrastructure funding for your projects, all while creating good jobs in your community.
By all indications, apprenticeship will need to greatly expand to meet the demands of Massachusetts’ booming construction industry— the federal government has created incentives in their infrastructure funding to encourage that growth.
