Public Works: Planning and Designing Public Spaces for Spatial Justice @ Zoom
Sep 1 @ 2:00 pm – 3:30 pm

Not all public spaces are created equal. Transformative planning and urban design begins with addressing historic and current experiences of racism and exclusion. But what does that mean in practice? Join the conversation with creative community leaders about what it means to design for spatial justice. We’ll explore how skate parks, sidewalk kitchens, and “dance courts” can change how public space is used, who feels welcome in it, and how inclusive creative placemaking can help lead the way toward lasting spatial justice.

Webinar: Wastewater Testing for COVID-19 @ Zoom
Dec 3 @ 11:30 am – 12:30 pm

Cities and towns are deploying a number of strategies to identify the spread of COVID-19 in their communities. One emerging method: testing sewage from households and buildings for the presence of the virus.

Knowing that COVID-19 is present in wastewater can be an important indicator of where its spread may be accelerating. In places where wastewater testing has been deployed, changes in the virus’ wastewater concentration have been observed several days before changes in reported new cases.

At this webinar, you will hear from experts on the science of wastewater testing for disease surveillance, as well as public health leaders who have deployed wastewater testing in their communities.

Water, Water Everywhere: The Increasing Threat of Stormwater Flooding in Greater Boston @ Zoom (Virtual)

MAPC is releasing new research that analyzed 27,000 flood claims from the historic March 2010 storms that dropped 18 inches of rain across Eastern Massachusetts. $59m in disaster assistance was paid out. We found that only 4% of disaster claims were located in FEMA 1% chance flood zones. With the prospect of more frequent and severe storms due to a changing climate, what can local, state, and the federal government do to better understand, prepare for, and minimize flooding and flood damage?

Presenters and panelists:

  • Anne Herbst, Principal Environmental Planner – retired, MAPC
  • Mia Mansfield, Director of Climate Adaptation and Resilience, MA Executive Office of Energy and Environmental Affairs
  • Jason Mammone, P.E., Director of Engineering, Town of Dedham
  • Van Du, Senior Environmental Planner, MAPC – Moderator

Following this event, all registrants will receive a copy of the report via email.
