Millis Residents Asked to Weigh in on a Vision for MBTA Community 3A Zoning

The Town and Advisory Committee want to hear from the community

MILLIS - February 1, 2023 - In response to the affordable housing crisis, Massachusetts recently passed new legislation that requires communities adopt zoning that creates opportunities for multi-family housing development. Meeting the new requirements will protect Millis’s access to state funding for capital improvements, infrastructure, and funds for the Millis Housing Authority. Encouraging housing growth in areas supported by the community can provide a boost to small businesses and give Millis workers more housing options to meet their needs.

An Advisory Committee representing Millis boards and committees are exploring ways to comply with the new state law. The Town secured state funds to receive technical support for this planning process from the Metropolitan Area Planning Council (MAPC), Greater Boston’s regional planning agency. The committee would like to hear from as many residents as possible to gather thoughts on where the Town should consider adopting 3A zoning and how to set zoning standards that support the community’s goals and interests. If this planning process leads to a 3A zoning proposal, Millis residents will need to vote to adopt zoning changes at Town Meeting.

The Town of Millis, the Millis MBTA 3A Advisory Committee, and MAPC are inviting Millis residents to attend a public forum at Millis High School on February 21 from 7:00 – 9:00 p.m. The meeting will take place in the high school cafeteria. Participants will learn about 3A and then be asked for their input on possible locations for 3A zoning and how to set local standards. This event will be held in person and broadcast on the Millis Public Schools YouTube Channel.

Participants coming to the forum in person are encouraged to RSVP, but this is not required to attend. Visit mapc.ma/millis3A to learn more about this project and other ways to share your input. We need to hear from you to pursue a path for housing that’s right for Millis. Please join us at Millis High School on February 21.
