Greater Boston Climate Action Plan: MAPC and Partners are Developing Priority Actions to Reduce Carbon Pollution Across the Region
Written by Sasha Shyduroff, Principal Planner, Clean Energy
January 17, 2024 - The Metropolitan Area Planning Council (MAPC) and partners are developing a region-wide Greater Boston Action Plan (CAP) that encompasses 167 communities in eastern Massachusetts and Southern New Hampshire. During this multi-year planning process, we will develop:
- A regional Greenhouse Gas (GHG) inventory,
- Priority Climate Action Plan (PCAP) of “implementation ready” GHG emissions reduction measures, and a
- Comprehensive Climate Action Plan (CCAP) with emission reduction goals for 2030 and 2050.
This is the first regional CAP for Greater Boston and provides an opportunity to engage a diverse range of municipal and community stakeholders in developing strategies and actions to reduce emissions and other pollutants within the region.
Priority Sectors: Energy Generation, Transportation, and Buildings
Our priority CAP focuses on action that can be taken in the top emitting sectors within our region: Energy Generation, Transportation, and Buildings. By focusing on these sectors, we can help cut emissions in the next 5-7 years to help meet critical 2030 emission reduction targets. Each “priority measure” consists of a high-level strategy and specific action that will be analyzed for GHG reduction potential, benefits to low-income and disadvantaged communities (LIDAC), and authority to implement.
Join Us for a Virtual Community Listening Session
During our upcoming community listening sessions, MAPC will share updates on our work since November and share our list of 10 priority GHG reduction measures. We are interested in hearing from municipal stakeholders, non-profits, community-based organizations and other community stakeholders their feedback and input on the draft priority measures. During both listening sessions we’ll have opportunities for attendees to share their ideas.
- Listening Session #2: Wednesday, January 24, 2024, 1:00pm- 2:30pm. Register.
- Listening Session #3: Thursday, January 25, 2024, 6:00pm- 7:30pm. Register.
The content of each session will be the same, so there is no need to attend both. Please register ahead of time.
You can find a recording of the previous listening session held on November 14, 202 here: Listening session #1.
