Earlier this month, the Metro Mayors Coalition, facilitated by MAPC, organized the 9th Annual Shannon Grant Basketball Tournament held at Somerville High School.
On Saturday, August 5th, the Metro Mayors Shannon Grant Community Safety Initiative brought together teams from Cambridge, Chelsea, Everett, Malden, Quincy and Revere to participate in a friendly basketball tournament. This year’s event included a three-point contest, lots of pizza, free T-shirts and awesome beats from a local DJ along with recognition from Governor Baker.
Team Cambridge took the championship on Saturday, beating Everett in a close and competitive game. MAPC thanks all of the volunteers, staff and participants for making this year’s tournament such a success. We are already looking forward to next year’s event.
The annual basketball tournament has been held since 2009 to bring together youth and police officers from the communities involved in the Metro Mayors Shannon Grant Community Safety Initiative. The Shannon Grant Community Safety Initiative is a state funded program that supports “regional and multi-disciplinary approaches to combat gang violence through coordinated programs for prevention and intervention.” In its 11th year, this program remains an invaluable resource to the participating communities in preventing gang and youth violence, while fostering collaboration between Metro Mayors municipalities.
