The climate crisis threatens all of us—and especially Massachusetts' most vulnerable residents. An Act creating a next-generation roadmap for Massachusetts climate policy (S.30) will help shape a stronger climate future that can improve the lives of all Commonwealth residents and accelerate the reduction of greenhouse gas emissions--and we're excited that it's updated, strengthened, and ready for the Legislature to vote on!
The bill sets Massachusetts on a path to reach net zero greenhouse gas emissions by 2050, sets strong interim and sectoral emissions goals, and improves policies and tools to help achieve those goals. It creates a new opt-in net zero "stretch" building code. Net zero buildings maximize efficiency, electrification, and use of renewable energy; reducing a major source of greenhouse gas emissions in Massachusetts and making buildings healthier and more resilient. The bill also strengthens environmental justice protections, improves the Mass Save program to better support electrification and workforce development, and strengthens climate considerations in the MEPA review process.
