Hubway Data Viz Hack Day

Last Saturday we hosted a our first-ever Hubway Data Visualization Hack Day at the The Bocoup Loft in the Innovation District of Boston. A “Hack Day is a workshop-like setting where people come together and work (i.e. hack) on a problem-set.

At our hack day, 5 teams worked all day on data explorations and visualizations of half a million Hubway bike trips. By the end of the day we had a wide range of different visualization projects and results, including an Arcade-style video game with a spaceship flying around Boston.

There are currently 26 visualizations submitted for the challenge, and the number is growing every day. We are really excited about the creativity, quality and variety of data visualizations we see throughout the challenge. Users are posting bike trip animations, transit proximity analysis and even the attempt to “prove” a male midlife crisis at the age of 50–just to highlight just a few.

Please check them out on the Hubway Data Challenge website and participate in the public voting! We also setup a Pinboard, where you can see all submissions on one page.

If you feel inspired, it’s not too late, we have extended the contest deadline to November 4, 2012.

Winners will be announced on November 13, 2012 at the Bocoup Loft, with a reception to follow at Lucky’s Lounge.
